Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes is the next hardcover 5th edition supplement coming for Dungeons & Dragons.
The new supplement will contain information on a host of new monsters as well as lots of storytelling information, such as lore about the schism between elves and drow and the Blood War between demons and devils. It mostly focuses on Mordenkainen’s research into the major conflicts of the multiverse.
Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes will be in game stores on May 18 and available widely on May 29.
Pre-order the book via Amazon.
Player options include new race info for tieflings, lves, githyanki and githzerai.
And Dungeon Masters will be happy, too: “Dungeon Masters looking for inspiration and greater challenges for players who have reached higher levels of play will find much to explore in Tome of Foes,” read a press release.
Like Volo’s Guide to Monsters before it, the book is something of a monster manual, lore book and player resource all wrapped into one. This one also includes a guide to the D&D multiverse, as presented by Mordenkainen, the great wizard of Greyhawk.
It’s cool to introduce Greyhawk and the mytical wizard to official 5e material though Mordenkainen technically shows up in Curse of Strahd as the Mad Mage of Mount Baratok.
I expect this means the book will include info on other campaign settings and worlds beyond the Forgotten Realms, but we shall see.
It sounds like it’s a combo Manual of the Planes and Monster Manual, similar to how Volo’s Guide to Monsters was a combo Monstrous Races and Monster Manual.
I like those kind of books. They’re useful to both DMs and players. And frankly, any book that has more 5th edition monsters in it is an added bonus for any DM who runs 5e games.
