Character Building Exercise: Destrier Strongheart, minotaur paladin

Minotaur Paladin by SlainDragon

When it was time to create a new character, I went to my miniatures collection and found a minotaur.

Unfortunately, in Dungeons & Dragons’ 5th edition books there is no official options to make a minotaur.

So far, only several races have been officially detailed by the D&D team.

(Editor’s Note: D&D did release an “Unearthed Arcana” featuring a minotaur playable race. As explained on their site, they’re untested draft rules.)

Well, thank goodness for Kobold Press.

Those fine folks not only wrote the two adventures in D&D’s Tyranny of Dragons storyline (Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat), but they’ve also created a few supplements that are 5e compatible.

I took inspiration from my minotaur paladin as well as the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon from 1983.

I also used Kobold Press’ Southlands Heroes for 5th Edition. In the supplement, you’ll find character creation rules for six races not found anywhere in Wizards of the Coast’s D&D books.

The races presented in Southlands Heroes include Aasimar, gnolls, lizardfolk, minotaurs, werelions and Tosculi, a sort of bug person. They’re all races from Kobold’s Southlands campaign setting.

The supplement also features seven new character backgrounds complete with tables for personality traits, ideals, bonds and flaws.

It’s a hefty amount of content for only $4.99. (Buy it in PDF or print at Kobold Press’ store.)

Anyway, listen in to my character creation session. I’m going to create my minotaur, Destrier Strongheart, right into the mic!
